CE 322L: Soil Mechanics Lab

At Christian Brothers University, CE 322L (Soil Mechanics Laboratory) is a one-credit-hour junior-level civil engineering course that is required by most ABET-accredited civil engineering programs. Soil Mechanics Laboratory is the hands-on lab component associated with the CE 322 course. The corequisite is CE 322 (Soil Mechanics).

There are several assignment groups in this course that are intended to assess student learning outcomes. These include the following categories: Pre-labs, Lab Reports, Mid-Term Exam, and Final Exam. The course syllabus gives a more detailed description of each of these assignment groups.

Course Objectives

Attainment of Course Objectives are measured by the assessment mechanisms of: Pre-labs, Lab Reports, Mid-Term Exam, and the Final Exam. At the conclusion of this course, with at least 70% accuracy, the student will be able to:

A. Identify types of soil sampling

B. Determine specific gravity soils in the laboratory

C. Determine grain size distributions of soils in the laboratory

D. Determine Atterberg limits of soils in the laboratory

E. Determine compaction properties of soils in the laboratory

F. Determine permeability properties of soils in the laboratory

G. Understand how to determine consolidation and shear strength properties
